Assignment Playlist Track 3

The Butcher's Jig/The Lark's March/The Gander At The Pratie Hole (Jigs) by the Tulla Ceili Band from the album The Tulla Ceili Band: A Celebration of 50 Years

Activity – all students receive three cards with A, B and CHANGE written on them. There are three different tunes in this set of jigs. Students listen to the tunes with the teacher emphasising where the A and B parts are of each tune. Teacher explains where the tunes change, i.e., where The Butcher’s Jig ends and The Lark’s March begins. After a few listens the students are asked to listen to the music again and hold up their cards on the different part of each tune (either the A or B part) and also their CHANGE card when a new tune begins. Teacher explains the timing of a jig, 6/8 and counts this out for the students. Teacher uses the phrase “butterfly, butterfly, butterfly…” to emphasise this. Teacher can now also contrast a jig with a reel through the caterpillar / butterfly phrases.
